Hockeyroos career on horizon for Fey

SUNSHINE Coast product Ashlea Fey says 2013 shapes as a key year in her pursuit of her Hockeyroos dream.

The 20-year-old from Bli Bli will tomorrow run out for her country at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.

While focused on the five-day tournament in front of her, like all ambitious young athletes she has one eye on the horizon.

With the national women's side undergoing a changing of the guard, Fey dares to dream of finding herself in the Hockeyroos fold.

She sees 2013 as her chance to make an impression, starting with the Australian Youth Olympic Festival at Sydney Olympic Park.

"The Hockeyroos are in transition at the moment and it's a really key time for anyone wanting to have a crack at it," she said.

Australia will meet China, Great Britain and the USA at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, which concludes on Sunday.

In light of the Jillaroos' recent 3-0 series clean sweep of Great Britain, she said the Australians were full of confidence.

Following this week's four way series, Fey will turn her focus to April's Australian Under 21s Championship in Darwin.

There she will look to earn a spot in the Jillaroos squad for July's Junior World Cup in Germany.

The defender played her junior hockey with Maroochydore before moving to Brisbane to play with the Valley Hockey Club in an effort to advance her career.
