More than one hitch on wedding day

RESCUING a woman from a car that careered over a cliff wasn't in the order of ceremony for couple Amanda and Greg Allan.

When planning their big day at Yamba, they thought they'd chosen the stress-free option with just 22 guests.

Having already called the ranger on Saturday morning to retrieve an escaped shetland pony, which was going rogue on the grass at their wedding venue at Yamba Lighthouse, the couple went to start laying out the chairs for the ceremony.

Just two hours before the main event, two cars went speeding past about 20m from where the couple were crossing the road with the chairs.

One car lost control, went flying through a gate and careered toward the cliff face that drops onto Turners Beach.

"The gate went flying into the air, just like a movie," Amanda said.

"I'll never forget the look on the lady's face, it was horrific."

The couple, who are both volunteer firefighters, threw away the chairs and ran to help, fearing the car had plunged down the cliff face, at least a 10m drop.

However the car hit a tree, breaking the full fall and the elderly woman freed herself.

Amanda ran to call for help while Greg helped the woman.

The woman was unharmed and emergency services arrived shortly after to relieve Amanda and Greg from their rescue duties.

"After the incident with the shetland pony, we just thought the day would continue normally. We didn't expect that," Amanda said.

Though shaken, the pair managed to maintain the adrenalin rush and get ready in time for their ceremony.

"We were happy the lady was okay and everything else went how we wanted," Amanda said.

"We certainly won't forget that in a hurry."
