Community-minded Holly has big plans to go places
COME November next year, school leavers will head off to the Glitter Strip for a wild Schoolies Week full of booze and partying.
But 16-year-old Holly Woodford has other ideas.
This young Warwick girl will pack her bags and head off to Thailand or Cambodia to volunteer in an orphanage for a couple of weeks.
It has been made possible by a grant from the RSL Youth Development Program, which Holly received for her invaluable contributions to the community.
"I heard about the program through my (Girl) Guide leader and decided to apply," Holly said.
After writing an essay, collecting references and answering a lengthy questionnaire, Holly was selected as the recipient of a $2500 grant which will go towards her trip at the end of next year.
"I still would have wanted to do it, but without the funding, I probably couldn't have," she said.
Holly found out she was one of the 200 winners last week and said she couldn't control her excitement.
"I logged onto the site and found my name was listed as one of the winners," Holly said.
"I was so stoked, I ran around our unit crying."
Holly is heavily involved in the community as a junior leader at Girl Guides and hosts a youth program on Rainbow FM every fortnight.
President of the Warwick RSL Sub-branch and referee for Holly, John Skinner, said he was only too willing to give her the rap she deserved with her application.
"I have known Holly her entire life and I have watched her grow into one of the most delightful young ladies I have ever known," he said.
"She has been a tower of strength to her parents; she has taken on responsibilities almost unheard of in people her age."
Holly encouraged anyone considering applying for the grant to do so because it was an opportunity to "put dreams into reality".
Since 2007, the RSL Youth Development Program, with Bond University, has provided more than $3million to assist 1200 exceptional students throughout Queensland.
