Home intruder found in bed with 10-year-old boy

POLICE are urging home owners to be vigilant about security after a stranger was allegedly found in bed with a child in a Darling Downs house at the weekend.

Detectives from the Toowoomba Child Protection Investigation Unit will allege a 38-year-old Dalby man was found in bed with a 10-year-old boy at an Oakey property on Saturday.

While the child was not physically harmed, police will allege the man inappropriately touched the child when he entered the house.

The man is believed to have drunkenly stumbled into the Oakey home and crawled into bed with the child when the alleged offence occurred.

The man was charged with one count each of enter dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence and indecent treatment of a child.

He was arrested and taken into custody after a formal complaint was made to CPIU detectives.

He was due to face Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday but his case was not reached and he was therefore remanded in custody to today.

Darling Downs Inspector Dave Isherwood said while the alleged offending was concerning, police did not believe the greater community was at risk of offences of a similar nature occurring.

He said all residents should be mindful of their home security measures and ensure their properties were secured at all hours.

"It is concerning (but) there is no suggestion at this point in time of other offending," he said.

Anyone with information in relation to the alleged incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
