Home made bomb explodes in man's hands

A QUEENSLAND man has been seriously injured after a home-made bomb exploded in his hands at a property in Victoria.

Police were called to a house in Caledonia St, St Andrews about 35km north-east of Melbourne, on Tuesday after neighbours heard explosions.

A police spokeswoman said on Wednesday the man, aged in his 40's, had significant injuries to his arm, hand, shoulder and leg as a result of the explosion shortly after 8pm.

She said the man was flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne where he remained in a critical condition.

It is understood there were two young children in the house at the time but they were not injured in the explosion.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
