Book to honour the Allora fallen
A BOOK telling the stories of Allora soldiers killed in the First World War is among the local projects to receive special Anzac commemoration funding from the State Government.
The Allora and District Historical Society has been granted $5128 from the Anzac Centenary Community Grants Program to publish a book about the lives of 50 local men who died between 1914-1918.
Historical society member Colin Newport, who came up with the concept of writing the book, said he was very happy about the funding.
"About 50 people from Allora were killed in the war and their stories have never been told," he said.
"We want to find out as much about them as we can."
Five hundred first edition copies of the book will be produced and launched at a special function in April next year.
"I've been going through the Australian archives and I've found their military history," Mr Newport said.
"I'd like to get some of their local history."
The Glen Aplin Memorial Hall and Sports Club was also successful in obtaining funding for its centenary commemorations.
A grant of $1817 was awarded to the group to create a First World War honour board and buy and erect a flagpole.
Minister Assisting the Premier on the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary Glen Elmes said the grants program was important to help communities in a time of reflection, honour and remembrance.
"Projects funded through the program will make a meaningful contribution to Queensland's collective historical memory of the First World War," he said.
