Speeding drivers flout give way

A WEST Warwick resident has raised the alarm over a dangerous local intersection, claiming a lack of stop signs is putting lives - including those of local children - at risk.

Following a two-vehicle crash at the junction of George and Pratten Sts on Friday, a local householder, who declined to be identified, said she had witnessed numerous near-misses at the black spot adjacent to Warwick West State School.

She said drivers routinely ignored the give way signs and raced through the intersection, voicing fears that "a kid on a bike could be next".

"Our kids walk across that intersection all the time as do a lot of pedestrians," she said.

"We've lived here for eight years and on one occasion a car flipped in a collision.

"Some hoons fly straight across the highway and continue down Pratten St as though it's a racetrack".

The resident acknowledged that stop signs would not necessarily correct all bad behaviour, but said they would be better than nothing.

An inspection by the Daily News yesterday showed the give way markings on Pratten St to be so badly faded as to be practically invisible to an approaching motorist.

A spokesman for the Southern Downs Regional Council said similar concerns had been raised about intersections along Canning St in east Warwick and ten stop signs had been installed in February after a recommendation by the police.

Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Shane Reid said yesterday police would take a look at the George and Pratten St intersection in response to the community concerns.

"Without being able to say at this point what our recommendation might be, we are happy to investigate the situation," Sgt Reid said.

"The kinds of factors we take into account in these instances are the history of accidents in the location, along with visibility from all approaches."

An elderly man with minor injuries had to be cut from one of the two vehicles involved in Friday's accident, the cause of which is still under investigation by police.
