Hoons pay for slow-down projects

IT'S a case of what comes around, goes around as speeding drivers pay for projects aimed at slowing them and other speeders down.

Over the coming months, fines from road rule offenders will pay for new flashing school zone signs at Greenlands and Amiens state schools.

The Southern Downs Regional Council's Alert and Active road trivia signs project is also being helped along by those caught driving over the speed limit.

The program recently scored $25,000 to build a sign-based trivia game along the New England and Cunningham highways.

The aim of the game is to improve driver concentration.

Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said speeding fines were a necessary evil when it came to keeping our roads safe.

He said the revenue was put to good use as the State Government worked towards reducing Queensland's road toll to zero deaths.

"The Palaszczuk government refuses to accept road trauma as an inevitable part of using the roads," he said. "That's why we're working toward a vision of zero road deaths and serious injuries on Queensland roads and committed to reducing road fatalities to below 200 by 2020."
