Highway horror car crash kills three

A TRAGIC accident at Helidon Spa left three people dead on Friday night.

The victims were a 79-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman from Cranley and a 70-year-old woman from Rangeville.

The crash happened where Twidales Rd and Postmans Ridge Rd cross with the Warrego Hwy at Helidon Spa. The two women, who were passengers in a sedan, were pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with serious injuries but died later.

A Police Media spokesman confirmed the car was crossing the Warrego Hwy when the collision occurred.

"It has temporarily stopped in the centre of the highway and unfortunately it has driven straight into the path of a four-wheel drive," the spokesman said.

A 19-year-old Withcott man and a 57-year-old Helidon Spa man were in the 4WD when the crash occurred. The driver of the 4WD suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and has appealed for witnesses of the crash to come forward.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman Keith Nash was at the scene following the crash and said it was not a good start to the school holidays.

He urged motorists to heed the Fatal Five message from police and avoid distraction and inattention, drink-driving, drug-driving, fatigue, not wearing seat belts and speeding

"People have to take due care on the road and drive safely," he said.
