Horse trials club set for major events in 2018
I HAVE seen the development of many clubs in Warwick in the past quarter of a century but few can match the Warwick Horse Trials Club.
The eventing team which won bronze at the Rio Olympics have all competed at Morgan Park.
Many have competed in lower levels against riders who are just in the sport for a bit of fun.
Eventing is one sport where the horse and rider are ranked. Even the best riders start at the bottom with a new horse.
The first major event of the year in eventing at Morgan Park will be on March 24-25.
This will be the highest profile event of the year as the program includes national and international classes.
Some riders will use the March event as a chance to qualify horses for major events in the southern states this year.
The March CIC/CNC event will have classes for one and two-star combinations as well as low-level classes.
There will be CNC events with classes from 60cm to two-star in both June and August.
Dressage for all events will be on the Saturday, showjumping on both Saturday and Sunday and cross country on the Sunday.
The club receives support from many volunteers in the Warwick area on cross country day. Changes are made to jumps between cross country weekends, no two courses are the same.
The Warwick Horse Trials Club was formed in 1996 and work was soon in progress to build the cross country course at Morgan Park.
Last year, the club held its 21st anniversary and released a history written by long-serving past president Simon Goddard.
A book on the outbreak of EI at Morgan Park and life in the lock-up was written by Goddard and released last year.
The club started this year with a coaching weekend at Morgan Park in mid-January which attracted 30 riders.
Past Warwick winner Brett Cantle was one of the instructors over the three days.
