Horses and kids keep firies alert
FROM burning buildings to mile-long bushfires, there is never a dull moment in the life of a fireman.
But sometimes, it is the quirky call-outs that give Warwick firemen something to laugh about.
Mark Sullivan recalled a day about three years ago when bay gelding Rambo slipped over in his horse float and wedged himself between the dividers.
The fire crew was called to his rescue and, after sedating the equine, used ropes and straps to winch him back onto his hooves.
"It's not funny at the time, but we can have a laugh about it after," Mr Sullivan said.
Other call-outs have involved children stuck in school port-racks, fingers in plug holes and seat-belt clips, horses' hooves wedged in meter-high fences... the list goes on.
Brett Farrell said a child once had his legs stuck in a swing, but just needed a little scare to set himself free.
"Once we brought out the reciprocating saw to get him out, he pushed himself right out," Mr Farrell said.
Officer-in-charge Syd Blank said they may run into burning buildings, but they were no heroes.
"I wouldn't call us heroic. We're just doing our job," Mr Blank said.
