Hot weekend has no impact on Cunningham Polocrosse Carnival at Bony Mountain

POLOCROSSE: It was hot and dusty at the multi-horse polocrosse carnival at Bony Mountain at the weekend but that didn’t stop Roly Slack-Smith having a ball.

Slack-Smith played for the Cunningham 3 team which went down to Taroom in the D-grade final.

He said the fields held up well on a dry weekend on the Southern Downs.

“It is great the way families can play together in polocrosse,” he said.

“Our team was aged 15 to 56 and included one father and daughter combination.”

He wasn’t just focusing on the need for rain on the Southern Downs.

“The whole country needs rain,” he said.

Slack-Smith has played for Queensland but isn’t heading to the nationals in Albury in a fortnight.

He will be heading west to Chinchilla in a fortnight for another carnival proudly wearing the red of Cunningham.

Club secretary Robyn Cooper said the carnival was the hottest she could remember.

“It went really well, being a multi-horse carnival, most players brought two horses,” Cooper said. The carnival attracted 55 teams, 15 more than expected.

There were players in action from as far away as Victoria.

Players start leaving this week for the April 18-24 nationals in Albury.
