Council hounds dog rescuer out of town

DOG rescuer Peta Herrero-Lopez will shut the doors on her Southside pet motel and canine haven next month.

The Best Friend Fur Ever Rescue service coordinator confirmed yesterday she was facing court action from Gympie Regional Council, and her landlord had opted to not renew her lease.

Ms Herrero-Lopez has come under heavy fire from her neighbours and the council since taking over the kennels in October last year.

Constantly barking dogs at the Eel Creek Rd site triggered a barrage of noise complaints the council could not ignore.

Ms Herrero-Lopez, who takes in unwanted dogs to save them from being dumped or put down, had 28 "fur babies" at her shelter when she received the news she would have to close down.

She has managed to find a home for 16 of them at the Sippy Downs animal refuge but still needs homes for 12 dogs, including a litter of puppies she rescued that were being advertised as pit bulls "but are not pit bulls", three bull arabs and an eight-year-old foxy-Chihuahua cross.

Once she re-homes the dogs and closes the doors on October 15, she hopes to move to Chinchilla.

"I am looking for a property out there," she said this week. "Gympie is not a good place for me to be."

Ms Herrero-Lopez's rescue service works with shelters in Queensland and New South Wales and has saved the lives of more than 150 dogs in the past year, most outside the Gympie region.

Anyone who can help or provide a dog with a good home, contact Ms Herrero-Lopez on 5482 3941 or via the Facebook page, Best Friend Fur Ever Rescue.
