How can Warwick rival Stanthorpe's Big Thermometer?
WARWICK'S southern neighbour is getting set to stamp its claim to being the "coolest” town in Queensland, as plans to build the long-awaited "big thermometer” gain momentum in Stanthorpe.
But it begs the question...what "big thing” could Warwick lay claim to?
The "Big Bucking Bronc”?
The "Big Rose”?
Member for Maranoa David Littleproud took to his Facebook page this morning announcing a further $10,000 to fund the Stanthorpe project.
Mr Littleproud stated the team in charge of the project were hoping to have to have the monument completed in time for the 2018 Apple and Grape Festival, which kicks off at the end of February.
A concrete slab has been laid for the monument on the banks of Quart Pot Creek.
Nambour has the Big Pineapple, Coffs Harbour has the Big Banana, Ballina has the Big Prawn, Bowen has the Big Mango and now Stanthorpe will have the Big Thermometer.
The project has been in the pipeline since 2002 and in February 2017, Southern Downs councillors unanimously approved the placement of the Big Thermometer at the submitters cost in Rotary Park.
The cost of the project - including the earthworks, caravan parking bay and concrete footpath - was estimated at $31,418.
