How the teams are shaping up for fresh cricket season

CRICKET: It is a tradition of the Warwick Cricket Association that the A-grade grand finalists from the previous season play in round 1 in the following season.

That pits premiers Maryvale Condamine against runners-up Warwick Hotel Colts at Slade Park on Saturday.

On Sunday, the third- and fourth-placed teams from last season, Victoria Hill and Wheatvale, will meet at Slade Park.

Reserve-grade grand finalists, Allora and Sovereign, will play at Allora on Saturday. Redbacks have the bye.

One of the new players this season is David Burton, who was a keeper and century-maker in seconds in Sydney grade cricket with Penrith District. He has joined Maryvale.

Two rounds of cricket will be played before the NRL grand final long weekend and then two more rounds before a break for the rodeo.

Most teams have room for more players. Message WCA on Facebook.

Maryvale

Captain - Paul Bourke

Gains - David Burton

Losses - Mitch Bourke will play in Toowoomba so will only be available for a few games.

Player of the Year tip - All rounder Tom Bourke despite him not playing until November.

Larrikin - Dave Walker

Comment - Maryvale has won back-to-back A-grade premierships but captain Paul Bourke admits the side will struggle for numbers in round 1. Fielding can win matches and Kieran Bourke has a safe pair of hands and is speedy in the field.

Warwick Hotel Colts

Captain - Alastair Costello

Gains - Jayden McLaughlin (Grafton)

Losses - Lachlan Gross won't be available until Christmas.

Player of the Year tip - John Cleary, he won the top award in the association last season.

Larrikin - Hugh Inmon from juniors will play more this year. He likes a chat with the batsmen and will do more wicket-keeping this season. Takes over larrikin role from Shaun O'Leary who is playing but not captain.

Comment: John Cleary is the X factor in Warwick club and representative cricket. Scored 71 with no fours, all his boundaries were sixes in last season's grand final. Kev Poole is a class fieldsman and will be a key with the bat.

Victoria Hill

Captain - Tony Morris

Gains - None

Losses - Liam Duncan and Brodie Frizzell (both overseas) and Scott McLennan (calf injury).

Player of the Year tip - Joe Morris will be in top five batsmen for the season and will take the new ball.

Larrikin - Ben Duff likes a good laugh. He won't be afraid to get in the ear of the batsmen.

Comment: Star all-rounder Adam May is not available this weekend and there will be seven Morris family members in the Victoria Hill team - brothers Alex, Nick, Joe and Tom Morris as well as Tony Morris and son Matt and Jack. All seven won't be in the team every week.

In the field, Will Duff will be fastest to the ball.

Wheatvale

Captain - Harrison Glasgow

Gains - Schoolboy batsman Tom Phillips hit three half centuries in last year's Australia Day Carnival. Lachlan Berge, son of former Wheatvale player Brad Berge.

Losses - Paul Cantwell (footy injury) but he will help out behind the scenes. Carter Bilbrough will miss the first month.

Player of the Year tip - Lachlan Boal, young player who scored his first century last season

Larrikin - Jonno Colfs, he is always cracking jokes to keep the team entertained.

Comment - Phillips comes with a reputation as a class batsman. Experienced player Chris Cantwell will open the batting with Boal, giving him his best chance to score a maiden century.

Allora

Captain - Sean Bryson

Gains - The Duggan brothers from Warwick, Tom and Jack.

Losses - None but Cameron Masters and Bruce Ole will miss early games with injuries.

Player of the Year tip - Gavan Scheiwe held the batting together with a few 50s last season.

Larrikin - Stewart Henderson makes a few smart comments on the field.

Comment - Captain Sean Bryson took 7-26 to be player of the final in his side's reserve-grade premiership last season. Team is aiming for a top-four finish and qualification for A-grade semis.

Sovereign Animals

Captain - Luke Cullen

Gains - Off spinner Jackson Frawley, Jacob Polzin from Killarney, leg spinner Reece Fowler, Harry Sipple, Anthony Nero (comeback).

Losses - None

Player of the Year tip - Luke Cullen is a genuine all- rounder who is as good with the bat as ball.

Larrikin - Rugby player Joe Levick from England keeps fellow fieldsmen entertained and chats to the batsmen.

Comment: Cahal Davis is back from the Wanderers tour with a different bowling action after some advice from Lance Roudenko on tour. He has changed his front arm movement in his action and the way he holds the ball.

Gardens Galore Redbacks

Captain - Andrew McConnell, captained Brothers to third grade premiership in Ipswich.

Gains - Steve Grogan (from Redbacks Aussie rules), Kieran Politch (had last season off)

Losses - Tyhe Clarkson, Andrew Bardsley and Daniel Bowles (family commitments), Luke Costello (Airlie Beach), Jack Fletcher.

Player of the Year tip - James Kurtz

Larrikin - Mark Mills. His favourite shot is the cut but he often misses the ball. Chirpy in the field.

Comment: Team trained well on Tuesday night with Dave Bergemann and Shaun Brown two of the keenest. Aiming for a top-four finish.
