HQ Class victory opens door to test in V8 Ute
AFTER four years of hard work and a lot of hope, Warwick driver Jamie Furness has earned a test weekend in a V8 Ute Series car with the Rentco Truckline team.
"This is the class I have been trying to get into for the past four years," a delighted Furness said.
Furness won the weekend after he joined with his uncle Gary Bonwick to win the second race in the HQ class at Bathurst at the weekend.
The HQ class was one of the lead-up events to the Bathurst 12 Hour which was contested by the top V8 Supercar drivers in Australia and some from overseas.
With a compulsory driver change in the two one-hour races on Saturday, Furness drove first in both races due to his lighter build.
It was advantageous for the heavier of the two to drive second due to fuel requirements.
Furness had the team second on Saturday morning when they pitted, but an accident and race stop had a major bearing on positions and Bonwick rejoined the race midfield to finish in 11th position.
In the afternoon race, Furness drove the first half of the race and went from 11th at the start, to first, which Bonwick maintained to the finish line.
"This is the biggest win of my career by far," Furness said.
For the weekend, they received the trophy for winning the second race and the trophy for the best-presented car and team outfit.
He won the trophy for most outstanding driver in the HQ class and the test weekend prize.
Furness has just returned to the driver's seat after having the first major accident of his career two months ago at Lakeside.
