Today chaos: ‘I think they’re actually mating’

AMID what's arguably been the most turbulent week in Today's history, the show has been derailed yet by another drama - this time, involving giant randy bugs.

Just three days on from Lisa Wilkinson's sudden resignation, Karl Stefanovic and temporary co-host Deborah Knight were crossing over to their Brisbane studio this morning to chat to celebrity chef Matt Moran about his new show, Family Food Fight.

The interview was on track for less than a minute before an army of insects began crawling across the screen - appearing to swarm across Moran's head.

"Do you know ... it looks like you have prawns on you," Stefanovic told Moran, as more and more bugs joined the party.

Moran explained that they were actually sitting on the camera outside (which provides the city skyline backdrop) and tried to shift focus back to his new show.

Of course, that wasn't going to happen.

"They are flying straight through your ears ... this is like a nature documentary, it's fascinating," Stefanovic exclaimed, before one of his co-hosts jumped in.

"So Matty, you know - gee, look at those two! I think they're actually mating."

It all went south from there, as the bugs stole all focus and Moran realised it was time to give up.

He desperately threw in one last plug before they wrapped up the interview, announcing he'd be at Brisbane's Good Food and Wine Show next weekend, before jokingly adding he was going to go collect the insects and put them in a salad.

Despite derailing the segment, the bug takeover certainly provided some lighthearted relief for Today during a week which has proven to be a bit of a PR nightmare.

And, as with just about everything in life, Simpsons did it first:

The candid moment comes just days after former host Wilkinson abruptly quit the Nine Network on Monday, with Nine saying it had "been unable to meet expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal" - which was widely believed to be about pay parity with Stefanovic.

The network's chief executive officer, Hugh Marks, hit out at Wilkinson in The Daily Telegraph yesterday, saying that Wilkinson was offered a $1.8 million package, but wanted $2.3 million.
