ICAC hears deal would have made Obeid family a fortune

THE corruption inquiry into Australian Water Holdings heard evidence of a deal that could have made the Obeid family "a fortune", potentially more than $100 million, on Tuesday.

A statement tendered to the inquiry by former Lehman Brothers banker Gardner Brook revealed on Tuesday the deal could have been bigger than the Mt Penny coal deal the Obeid family was involved in.

Mr Brook's statement said during meetings with Eddie Obeid Snr's son Moses, Moses told him the family would effectively control "all of Sydney's water".

"Moses said that he and his family has an ownership in Australian Water Holdings and that they had great influence over it," the statement reads.

"He further mentioned that the company was looking into a privatisation deal where they could effectively control all of Sydney's water.

"Moses said, 'We are going to make a fortune out it'."

Mr Brook's statement further revealed he attended a 2008 meeting at Moses' home, where Moses, former minister Joe Tripodi and Eddie Obeid Snr sought to discuss the company with him.

"As I sat down Moses stated, 'This meeting is not happening'," the statement reads.

"I wasn't really sure what he meant by that but it seemed a bit strange to me.

"It all seemed very clandestine and I got the impression that Mr Tripodi didn't like me."

Mr Brook further told the inquiry that in 2008 Moses and Liberal Party donor and chief executive of AWH Nick Di Girolamo visited him at his office.

He said he recalled Moses telling him that a lucrative deal with AWH could "eclipse" the Mt Penny coal deal.

The hearings continue.
