Iles celebrates 'massive surprise'
BRENDAN Iles described his win in the inaugural Warwick RSL Memorial Club "Club Person of the Year" award as a massive surprise.
"It is an honour to be the first winner," he said.
On Monday night, Redbacks Australian Rules captain Iles received a $500 cheque from the RSL before national endurance champion Cora Becker was presented with a $1000 cheque by Warwick Credit Union CEO Lewis von Stieglitz as the overall winner.
"The support for any club starts with the juniors," Iles said of his club involvement after winning an award judged by on and off field performances.
"It is good to have an award to recognise town and regional sport; I love to play for my hometown with schoolmates I grew up with."
Guest speaker Katie Bickford said it was remarkable to hear of the performances, many at international level, of the monthly winners.
"It speaks volumes for the way Warwick supports its sports people," Bickford said.
As a national equestrian representative at university level, Bickford said she was impressed with the variety of equestrian sports represented.
In her role on the board of the Brisbane Broncos, she believes every game was making the team stronger.
"I am quietly confident we can make the top four," she said.
