Illusionist’s tricks make for a Halloween treat in Warwick
TRICK or treaters at Warwick Video Ezy were in for a treat as magician Joe You showed off his sleight-of-hand skills.
The Chinese-born magician is based on the Sunshine Coast and first got involved in magic while at university.
"I was studying for a pharmacology exam, which I hated, and thought there had to be something better to do while I was sat down for hours reading," Mr You said.
"I thought that practising with a pack of cards could be a bit of fun to pass the time."
Mr You said getting involved in magic had given him a boost of self-confidence that has allowed him to take his act to the international stage.
"I got to the semi-finals of America's Got Talent doing some mentalism routines," he said.
"Mentalism is essentially magic mixed with psychology and showmanship to do stuff like mind-reading by changing audience perception and using misdirection.
"It can be harder to do a sleight-of-hand trick physically, but harder to do a mentalism trick well."
