Young man charged over death of mate

THE young man who allegedly drove the ute his best friend was thrown from has been charged over his death.

Lloyd Graham Slater appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday charged with dangerously operating or interfering with the operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm.

Mr Slater and his best friend Zac Roberts were on a camping trip with friends when the 18-year-old was thrown from the vehicle on the beach at Cape Palmerston on December 15, 2012.

Despite the best efforts of his mates to save him, Zac Roberts died.

Mr Slater sustained serious injuries, including a broken pelvis, in the crash.

The community was stunned by the tragedy.

At the time Zac, a former Mackay Christian College student, had been doing his electrical apprenticeship.

His boss, Brad Ritchings, remembered him as "the best apprentice I had worked with".

A 100km race, called the Zach Mach Adventure, was hosted by Mackay Christian College in May to honour the much loved former student.

His grandmother and aunt chose to honour the young man by naming a star for him.

In March this year family and friends, including Mr Slater, gathered at Eimeo Beach to celebrate what would have been Zac's 19th birthday.

Mr Slater was ordered to appear in court for a committal mention on October 25.
