IN DEEP: Japan diving lures Coast instructor

WHEN scuba divers dream and discuss exotic dive locations, names like Palau, Chuuk, Sipadan, Sea of Cortez and the Galápagos Islands come to mind.

Rarely does Japan ever get a mention.

This may soon change at least for local divers.

This weekend Chris Williams, a local dive instructor, is heading to Okinawa as part of a familiarisation dive tour to see what is on offer for divers.

All going well, Chris hopes to lead a tour there next year.

Okinawa is the main island in the Ryukyu Archpelago. It is approximately a three-hour flight from Tokyo south to Okinawa.

The dive sites around Okinawa are famous for their underwater caves, pristine coral reefs, steep drop offs and breathtaking underwater landscapes.

Underwater visibility regularly exceeds 25 metres.

During the period January to March, schools of Hammerhead sharks frequent the islands.
