Wesley Indoor Bowls Club honours long-serving trio

INDOOR BOWLS: Three Wesley Indoor Bowls Club members with a combined 73 years of service have been honoured with life memberships.

The presentation was made at afternoon tea this week at the Williams Hall.

Lilian McBean, Marg Wilkie and Merle Baguley could write a book about how to be an office bearer or captain: they have done it all.

Current Warwick Indoor Bowls Association president Lilian McBean first joined the Wesley club 22 years ago and could have passed 1000 club competitions.

"I only miss about one weekly bowls day each year," she said.

She was providor for four years, president for six, vice-president for four, vice-captain for four and is the current captain.

Marg Wilkie first joined Wesley in 2000 and was secretary for nine years, vice-president for one and president for four at a time club membership doubled. She is now vice-captain.

"We all felt humbled and privileged to have been awarded life membership of the club," she said.

Merle Baguley was providor when the club played in the hall adjacent to the old Wesleyan Church on land where Big W now stands.

She has been captain and vice-captain and won three Warwick association singles titles and enjoyed four pairs victories, one with her sister Joy Girvan and one with fellow life member Marg Wilkie.

"I have played the sport for 36 years, I started when my daughter Janelle was able to drive herself to work," Baguley said.

"I really like the company, I love going to indoor bowls each week."

They join the only previous life member, Mabel Mott, who was at the induction ceremony for the new life members.

The club has operated for 63 years and plays each Wednesday at Williams Hall from 1.30pm.

Weekly games are followed by afternoon tea in the hall. New players always welcome.
