Inglewood club father and son partner in cricket

CRICKET: It was first time batting together for Fred Howard and son Aden at Slade Park in the Inglewood Roos game against Maryvale and they made the most of it.

If the game was played over 50 overs, it could have been a century partnership but the 40 overs ended after father and son had added 41.

The pair came together when Fred went out to bat at 8-101.

Aden is in his second season with Inglewood but the game last weekend was the first for the Roos for Fred.

With some teams struggling for numbers at the start of footy season, Fred came to the ground ready to play and wasn’t just in the team due to the right time, right place rule.

Fred, who has played club cricket in the Stanthorpe competition, now lives in Warwick and showed early in his innings the pull shot was one he has kept on the back burner in recent years.

Aden said there were no close run-out attempts.

“I learnt early in the partnership it was no quick singles,” he said.

While Aden reckoned his father’s best shot was to cow corner (leg side), the son listed his own best shot as the straight drive.

While there was no competition between the pair, Fred ended up with an unbeaten 24 and Aden 15 when the 40 overs were bowled.

Inglewood has missed the A-grade finals in the Condamine Cup so this season but have a chance to go for the reserve-grade premiership.

The club hasn’t been playing in Warwick for a decade yet but already has A and reserve-grade premierships to its credit.

The Roos team is predominately of players from Inglewood but it is boosted by regulars from Warwick, including Aden, who has already played touch rugby for Australia and is an accomplished rugby league player.

The bad news is that father and son are unavailable this weekend but Aden has enough games to play finals cricket.
