Injuries reduce Redbacks to 17 players in tough contest

AUSSIE RULES: Despite fielding a team of 21 in their match against the South Toowoomba Bombers on Saturday, the Warwick Redbacks AFC ended the game with just 17 players after the team was wracked by injuries.

The tough contest put an end to the Redbacks' winning streak, with the home side being beaten by the visitors with a final margin of 44 points to 72.

South Toowoomba maintained their lead throughout the entire match but the Redbacks started to climb back after the first quarter.

But despite a low scoring fourth quarter, South Toowoomba still secured the win.

Warwick Redbacks AFC president Ben Lubben said Brent Walker, Brendan Iles and Jack Fletcher were among the players injured in the match.

"It just goes to show how tough the contest was, but at no point that is an excuse for the loss," he said.

"We've got a bye next week then out to Goondiwindi to take on another strong side, it's definitely motivation for the boys to hook in."

Lubben said Andrew Bardsley and Tyhe Clarkson continued to be strong performers on the turf, while Kris Millard and Shane Iles were also stand outs.

"Shane was just phenomenal, he was everywhere that he needed to be on the ground and he was a very strong player," Lubben said.

The Redbacks also debuted their new guernsey yesterday, featuring new major sponsor GJ Gardner Homes.

"Everyone seemed to love them, of course it would be good to get a win in the new guernsey," Lubben said.

The Redbacks are now sitting third on the ladder and are set to take on the Goondiwindi Hawks at Riddles Oval on May 19.
