Interstate polocrosse on in Warwick this weekend

INTERSTATE sport is played at Morgan Park almost as often as interstate rugby league is played at Suncorp Stadium.

The Warwick Polocrosse Club hosted international and interstate competitions in April and will host women's masters and sub-junior clashes between Queensland and New South Wales this weekend as part of the IOR Petroleum Rose Bowl carnival.

Warwick pair Sally McGrath and Tori Latham are in the Maroons women's team. Many of the players in the interstate teams have played open polocrosse for their states down the years.

Tanya Mulligan (nee Hollow) has captained Australia at World Cup level in Warwick and will captain New South Wales this weekend. McGrath has played in a winning World Cup team with Hollow.

Warwick is in outstanding form in south east zone polocrosse with the club fielding 10 teams at Cunningham last weekend and coming away with four victories.

Club treasurer Robyn Fraser said she was expecting 70 plus teams this weekend. "It is an attraction being the last carnival before the Queensland state championships in early September in Chinchilla. Two weeks is perfect between carnivals in the lead-up to the championships,” Fraser said.

Warwick will field 10 teams this weekend. All 480 horse stalls have been booked.

Quirindi, Guyra, Pallamallawa, Inverell and Narrabri are five of the New South Wales clubs coming to the carnival.

It is likely Trent Mortimer and April Leggett, who played for Australia in Tests against South Africa in April, will play for Narrabri. Tansey teams will include current Test players Trent Collins and Tom O'Neill. The Warwick club has extended its grounds to the east after leasing more land from Southern Downs Regional Council to cater for even more teams. Games from 6pm Friday, 8am-8.30pm Saturday and 7.30am-3pm Sunday.
