Irish visitors hop to it to get jump on Aussies
GEORGINA Georgina Spillane travelled from Ireland to play polocrosse, but her first aim is to spot a kangaroo.
"Everyone else saw one on the way from Brisbane but I missed it," Spillane, the junior vice-captain said.
One of her best chances to see a kangaroo is between today and Sunday when the Ireland junior and intermediate teams will travel to Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve for training before three days of matches starting tomorrow.
Spillane said the team wanted to beat Australia just like the British and Irish Lions beat Australia in rugby.
"The main thing is to do our best," she said.
Junior captain Toby Fynn has already enjoyed a win against the United Kingdom and been in losing Ireland teams to South Africa and a touring New South Wales.
He is in his first year of polocrosse and hails from Dublin.
The Ireland intermediate team is captained by Will Armstrong who came through pony club ranks like so many of the members of the Australian teams.
"We play a different style of polocrosse to Australia with more overhand passes," he said.
He is currently waiting for school results hoping to study civil engineering.
Ireland intermediate vice-captain Aimee Keogh played in a touring Ireland team three years ago in Western Australia and is looking forward to playing on Australian horses.
"The Australian horses are very agile," she said.
Action will be at Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve this weekend, hosted by the Cunningham club, and at Morgan Park, hosted by the Warwick club next weekend. Club carnivals will be held as part of the same draws.
The junior and U21 international teams will play a round robin with two Polocrosse Association of Australia development teams selected from outside national squad and Queensland.
