Issues over AFL Club stand demolition

AUSSIE RULES: Warwick Redbacks life member Colin Pope wants the club committee to call an extraordinary meeting of the club before going ahead with possible demolition of the grandstand at Warwick Credit Union Oval.

Pope said he had put 15 years into the club and others had put more and all he wanted was the chance to have a say.

"Already, recently elected president Iain Cutmore has resigned as he couldn't get the committee to put the issue to the members.

"I acknowledge the grandstand could do with some repairs but it is easier to repair rather than knock down the current grandstand," he said.

Club treasurer Adam Colrain said the committee made a decision to demolish the old grandstand for a number of reasons.

"We had safety concerns and it may not meet the Building Code of Australia; there are already children climbing on the grandstand," Colrain said.

"Looking at the state and age of the grandstand, it is a bit of an eyesore. The committee also want the fans to utilise the clubhouse more at games.

"This is the first I have heard of calls for an extraordinary meeting."

Pope said he knew one supporter was keen to arrange sponsorship on the back, sides and top of the grandstand.

"This would provide income for the club. Not everyone wants to be near the licensed areas during a game, we want to keep a grandstand which is used by the supporters of visiting teams, our supporters and families of the Redbacks," Pope said.

Colrain said the club had put up five new fibreglass seats three metres in length in front of the clubhouse.

"We have more seats to erect in front of the clubhouse," Colrain said.

"There is similar seating on the balcony and seating in the clubhouse."
