It is full steam ahead for festival train trip

A COAL-fired steam engine will chug through Toowoomba's CBD this Saturday, in a first during the Carnival of Flowers for the Warwick train.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway has organised the special trip. It is the first time the restored C17 coal-fired, steam locomotive has made a trip to the Garden City in September.

"It will be a spectacular sight," Bob Amos of the Southern Downs Steam Railway said.

"The last trip we did to Toowoomba, lots of people who were stopped at Margaret St got out of their cars and waved at us."

The steam train will depart Warwick at 8am and is scheduled to arrive at Toowoomba Railway Station at 11.30am.

It will then depart at 2.30pm, arriving back in Warwick at 6pm.

One way trips are also available on the train.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway is a not-for-profit group aiming to establish a tourist railway experience on the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

The group restored the C17 locomotive in 2008 and is currently restoring part of the roundhouse at the Warwick Railway Precinct.

Volunteers regularly run trips to Stanthorpe, Wallangarra, Clifton, Hendon and Goondiwindi.
