More heartache for Dick Smith lay-bys and warranties
IT WAS a mixture of good and bad news for Dick Smith customers, when receivers outlined procedures for lay-bys and warranties.
Customers who paid a lay-by deposit can still purchase the product as long as it is in stock, the balance is paid and the item collected within seven days of notification by the store.
Otherwise, the deposit will be forfeited entirely.
The document stated for products paid for but not yet supplied, the customer will become an unsecured creditor of Dick Smith if the product cannot be supplied.
For warranty claims on branded products purchased on or before January 4, customers should contact the manufacturer directly.
If the faulty item is Dick Smith branded, the customer will become an unsecured creditor.
As for extended warranties, the document states those purchased prior to October 1 last year remain valid.
For customers who purchased an extended warranty between October 1 and January 4, the situation is "currently under consideration by the external provider and is expected to be resolved shortly."
According to Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), unsecured creditors are paid after secured creditors, receivers' costs and priority claims such as employee entitlements.
