Thieves target garden ornaments
THEY sat silently in the garden with their smiling little faces protruding from the foliage. This is the lure of the garden ornament and there’s a thief patrolling Southern Downs’ streets looking for the novelty of concrete creations.
A Warwick Police spokeswoman said three garden ornaments, with a total worth of more than $1000, had been stolen from two private addresses last week.
“These ornaments weighed about 60 to 70kg – they’re heavy – and would need at least two people to carry them,” the spokeswoman said.
“The first offence has occurred at a residence at Hawker Road where two figures sitting on a bench and little people under an umbrella have been taken.”
The Hawker Road thefts allegedly occurred on Saturday night and were worth about $500 and $460 each.
“The second offence occurred at a Moncrieffe Street residence and (a) 1.2 metre long Jack and Jill sitting on a park bench ornament – similar to one of the items taken at Hawker Road – has been taken, which was estimated to be worth $390 and went missing between July 11 and 17,” the spokeswoman said.
“They’ve entered the front yard and located the ornament of considerable weight, so at least two people would be needed to carry it, and transported it in a vehicle.”
The spokeswoman urged neighbours to lookout for each other and if anyone had information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 888 000 or Warwick Police on 4660 4444.
“These are similar offences which have occurred in a short period of time so from a crime prevention point-of-view, if you notice someone or something out of the ordinary, give us a call,” the spokeswoman said.
“Take down a description of the car, number plate and what the people look like and give police a call. Information can be given anonymously.”
