James Lister champions push for new Warwick water supply
LESLIE Dam was the wrong place to build a dam according to Southern Downs MP James Lister, who said there "just isn't enough" water in the region.
"Water is a huge issue in the Southern Downs and I will be first at the table to get more water security for our urban and agricultural needs," Mr Lister said.
He said the region was obliged under state and federal arrangements to ensure sufficient water flowed downstream.
"I feel that Leslie Dam was built in the wrong place - Elbow Valley would have been a better solution," he said.
Mr Lister said the "necessary" water restrictions for town users was an inconvenience.
"And, on top of this, the dry spell means that there are farmers who have their share of irrigation water dropped to zero, which impacts our local economy and jobs.
"Perhaps it would be better to have Leslie as an urban-only supply and build another dam for irrigation elsewhere."
A SDRC spokeswoman said the council was developing a water efficiency plan and water infrastructure plans included a second water pipeline from Storm King Dam to Mt Marlay and the Stanthorpe waste water treatment plant.
