Jane is the first winner of polocrosse award

JANE Cooper rates it a huge honour to be the inaugural winner of the Doreen Shepherd Memorial Award for leadership in women's polocrosse in Australia.

Polocrosse Association of Australia board member Michael Rynne recalled the involvement of the late Mrs Shepherd, who lived at Murray's Bridge, and her family in polocrosse.

Her three children and their families have been heavily involved in the Warwick club and some have gone on to represent Australia.

"I still come to Morgan Park and think about where she used to sit on the sideline," Rynne said.

Cooper played in two winning World Cup teams in Warwick and is one of the most capped in Australian polocrosse history.

She is captain of the cup team to play in South Africa this year and has been part of a Western Australian women's team which has enjoyed great success at national level.

"It is a huge honour to win this award at this time in my career," Cooper said.

"The award recognises Mrs Shepherd whose family has been so involved in polocrosse in this region and this community."

She said the award presented at the weekend would be right up there with the other achievements in her career.

"You don't play for awards but to win and enjoy the game but it was nice to be recognised for my leadership of women in sport."

Cooper said returning to Warwick for the 2019 World Cup as a player was not out of the question.

"I will be 44 by then," she said.

"There are a lot of young players in the cup team and the PAA teams which played at the weekend."

She flew home to Geraldton yesterday with a new trophy to show husband Trent and their two daughters. The family were at the first weekend of Australian team games at Albury but returned home last week.
