Janine not satisfied just caring as a nurse
WOMEN across the Southern Downs have long been singing the anthem that anything men can do, we can do too.
And Janine Hegarty is showing the blokes that is just the case.
As a qualified nurse by day, Ms Hegarty devotes her time to helping save lives.
But her nurturing nature and willingness to help doesn't stop once she leaves the surgery.
Mrs Hegarty has been a member of the Warwick SES for about five years and whether wading through floodwaters, searching scrub for missing people, or hauling someone up a cliff face, Mrs Hegarty is there to lend a helping hand.
"I've always been involved in community things, but this is something a bit different," she said.
"It's helping people in need and that's what really appealed to me."
Her most recent deployment was to Maryborough to help during the floods.
She said she had been confronted by many heart-rending situations, but knowing her team was there for support always got her and her teammates through.
"Some things are quite confronting, like watching people toss out everything they own in floodwaters, but it's the satisfaction that comes with helping people that's the rewarding part," Mrs Hegarty said.
"I think my nursing background definitely helps with it all and we all support each other."
Mrs Hegarty said she would love to see more females join groups like the SES.
"I think it would be really good to see more younger females get involved," she said.
"You learn a lot of skills that you wouldn't otherwise learn and it really is a lot of fun."
Tomorrow, we celebrate International Woman's Day, where we acknowledge the admirable work by women across the globe, just like Janine.
