Jarryd Hayne to debut in 49ers season opener

FORMER rugby league star Jarryd Hayne is set to make a fairytale NFL debut, after earning a spot in the San Francisco 49ers' squad to take on the Minnesota Vikings today.

The former Eels, Blues and Kangaroos star is set to line up as the 49ers' third running back, behind Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush.

He will also be expected to act as a kick/punt returner, a special teams position he excelled in during the pre-season.

The 49ers announced via Twitter the seven players on the inactive list for the clash, with Hayne not among them.

DeAnrew White (wide receiver) and Mike Davis (running back) will miss out, named on that inactive list.

The 49ers will play the Vikings in their season opener at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, with the game to start at 12.20pm (AEST).

Earlier, Hayne retweeted an inspirational post, summing up his story so far.
