Jersey is a bonus from the roadshow

COUNCIL plumbing inspector Glen Reid has won a signed Queensland State of Origin jersey and plans to hang it in his sports bar, in honour of his younger brother.

Mr Reid won the 1980 jersey, signed by legends such as Wally Lewis, Gene Miles, Alan Langer, Gordon Tallis and Mal Meninga, as part of the It's A Bloke Thing men's health roadshow that came to Warwick in August.

"I've never won anything in my life…apart from my lovely wife," Mr Reid said. "I still can't believe it, I'm speechless."

There were more than 250 men who entered the draw from 10 roadshow locations throughout the Darling Downs, South-West Queensland and South Burnett.

The It's A Bloke Thing information sessions covered top health issues facing men today, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, smoking and mental health.

According to the DDSWQ Medicare Local Regional Health Atlas using the most recent data available (2008), 62.8% of males in Warwick were overweight and obese and 16.9% had heart disease.

The prevalence of psychological distress was 11.1%.

Mr Reid said the men's health roadshow was "totally worthwhile and necessary".

"In 1998 I lost my brother Bruce to suicide," he said.

"Men's health is already important to me and I'm happy that there is a foundation that puts on something like this; it's been a long time coming."

Mr Reid said the concept of talking about men's mental health was a wonderful initiative.

"It's still a stigma; people think if you're here then there must be something wrong," he said. "I've been affected personally and I know you need to get out there and talk about it."

Darling Downs South-West Queensland (DDSWQ) Medicare Local marketing engagement manager Melanie Cameron said the program was a big success throughout the region.

"We had such a good response that we are looking at holding similar events next year with other health issues we might explore," she said.

It's a Bloke Thing health roadshow was presented by the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation and DDSWQ Medicare Local with support from the Arthur Beetson Foundation.
