Jihadist ordered back to prison

A FORMER Qantas cabin cleaner convicted of writing a do-it-yourself jihadist manual that included step-by-step guides to assassinations, bombmaking and shooting down planes, has been ordered back to jail after being free for the past year.

Lebanese-born Islamic journalist Belal Saadallah Khazaal -- who in 2008 became the second person convicted under Australia's tough new anti-terrorism laws -- had his bail revoked late yesterday after exhausting his avenues of appeal.

Khazaal, 43, is behind bars after the High Court unanimously rejected a NSW Court of Appeal ruling last year that overturned his conviction on a charge of compiling a document to assist in a terrorist act.

His lawyer, Charles Waterstreet QC, described yesterday's High Court ruling as "personally traumatic" for his client.

"To go from trial to conviction to winning an appeal to being essentially re-convicted, well, it's almost akin to double jeopardy," Mr Waterstreet said.
