J&J; event captures the essence of the Empress of Blues
IN A celebration of strong women, the music of Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, will be brought to life during Jumpers and Jazz.
Legendary jazz musician Barb Fordham will capture her essence, bringing a love of adult-themed cabaret style performance to the Capture Your Essence women's luncheon.
For 25 years the jazz songbird has been entertaining audiences, and in the Warwick Town Hall she will bring the empress to life.
Performing alongside her partner, Neil Neilsen, Ms Fordham will sing the music of the late Bessie Smith.
The talented musician has been described an important woman of her time and still relevant to today's audience as strong, engaging and fearless.
She stood her ground against racism and chauvinism.
Describing the performance as a celebration of Bessie's life, music and those she influenced, Ms Fordham said guests could expect a show that was both theatrical and cheeky.
"It's the kind of music that takes no prisoners," she said.
"Packing a punch with its protest of love lost, love made and love shot to hell."
The show will also weave through stories of Ms Fordham's life as a young woman growing up in the suburbs of Brisbane and her love of singing the blues.
Capture Your Essence will be held on Sunday, July 24.
The full program begins at noon for a 12.30pm lunch, while the half program begins at 2.45pm for a 3pm start.
Tickets are $87 for the full program or $35 for the half program, including afternoon tea.
