John Mansell dies in Targa Tasmania Porsche crash

A FORMER Mackay businessman has died during the Targa Tasmania race event near Deloraine in the state's north.

John Mansell, 70, was believed to be travelling at speeds of up to 200km/h when his red Porsche Coupe went over a crest, became airborne and crashed into a gumtree, bursting into flames on impact.

The accident happened about 9.15am yesterday, and Mr Mansell's 26-year-old navigator is in a serious condition in Launceston General hospital.

Mr Mansell was a travel operator in Mackay for many years.

He ran a travel agency called Travelworld and he opened the adjacent Mackay Bus Terminal and cafe in Macalister St in 1984.

He left Mackay in 2003.

It is believed Mr Mansell competed in a number of Targa rallies.

It is the second death in the event's 22-year history.

Organisers made the decision to continue the event after the accident, stating that it was in keeping with the spirit of motor sport.
