Local artist to judge opal awards

ELBOW Valley artist John Weeronga Bartoo has been invited to be one of the judges at this year International Opal Jewellery Designs Australia Awards at Lightning Ridge in New South Wales.

Partner Kay O’Dea said the awards were held every second year as part of the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival in July.

“John will also open in an exhibition titled ‘Weeronga Bartoo and Friends’ at the time of the festival,” she said.

“Before heading to Lightning Ridge he will open his next Solo Exhibition ‘Cotton and Paper’ at the Pepperina Gallery at Nobby on July 2.”

Ms O’Dea said the exhibition would feature his works on Euraba Cotton Rag Paper from Boggabilla, Elephant Dung Paper from Sri Lanka and Mulberry Paper from Thailand.

“There will also be a sneek preview of his textiles on totally organic material from the United States,” she said.

“On August 31 his year-long exhibition in Mannheim in Germany closes and he has just been notified that he will be exhibiting in Paris for the first time in October.”
