Johnson says Gillow has plenty more to prove on the track

FORMER elite cyclist Ben Johnson believes we are only just starting to see the best of three-time national time trial champion Shara Gillow.

Belli Park's Gillow, 25, has enjoyed a couple of strong seasons in the sport.

She won a stage en-route to ninth place overall in the Giro Donne in 2011 and she claimed 13th place in the women's time trial at the London Olympics last year.

She also finished 10th in the women's time trial at the 2012 World Championships in the Netherlands.

Then yesterday morning (AEST) the Orica-AIS rider claimed one her most memorable victories in stage two of the Giro Del Trentino Donne in Italy.

It was an impressive display but Noosa Heads' Johnson, who has competed in major European races with pro-continental teams, believes we haven't seen anything yet.

"Winning a race like that means she's doing pretty well," he said

"But she's not at her (absolute) peak yet.

"She's probably starting to hit her peak now and will probably have a couple of good years ahead of her, especially now she is with (sport director) Dave

McPartland. "He's doing a really good job with the women."

Johnson, 30, rode with Cofidis, Agritubel and Slipstream.

He believes Gillow's strength is her will to succeed.

"I think she's very driven and dedicated. That's what makes her good. She just trains harder and works harder than anybody else," he said.

Gillow escaped a breakaway group of four to ride solo to victory to Sarnonico.

"When the gap (to the peloton) dropped to 40 seconds, I knew I had to attack," Gillow said.

"I went on the circuit climb coming into the last lap and a half (of six). After that, I was in time trial mode to the finish."
