Joint winners from rowing and athletics for sports awards
A ROWER and a thrower have shared the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year award.
The judges were unable to split Ella Hudson (rowing) and Zac Caterson (athletics) who each won one national gold medal in their respective sports, as well as numerous other medals at both club and school level. Both have been recognised by their sports as athletes of potential.
The joint win is the first in the 24 years since the awards started in 1993.
They join an illustrious group of junior sports star of the year winners including Olympic hockey gold medallist Dean Butler and two athletes who have captained their country for long periods of time, Laura Geitz (netball) and Stephanie Hancock (rugby league).
Each received $250 from the Warwick Credit Union at last night's dinner.
The joint win is on top of Caterson's junior sports star of the year win for the 2015 year. He won gold in javelin, silver in discus and shot put and bronze in hammer at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth last year after winning gold in the four throws at the state championships.
Caterson won three events at the state little athletics championships and set a shot put record.
Hudson was aged 14 when she won the U17 double scull at the nationals in rowing and was second in single scull and third in the quad sculls.
She won three gold medals at the state school championships competing for Somerville House and two gold medals at the state club championships.
Rose City Boxing Club member Jake Wyllie won the Doc Bodimeade Encouragement Award after an outstanding year which included a state title and national Golden Gloves title.
He has been invited to attend an Australian Boxing Development Camp at the AIS and won Fighter of the Night at the Braydon Smith Memorial Fight Night.
