Warwick residents to spread a little joy in face of drought
IT MIGHT be looking like a desperately dry Christmas for families in Longreach, but the kindness of Warwick residents is set to rain relief in the coming months.
Off the back of another dry winter, the Community Disaster Relief Van team is building momentum for its Outback Relief Fund , which has helped more than 100 families since April.
The Warwick volunteers are running a Christmas Appeal campaign in the coming months to continue support for struggling farmers.
Less than 25mm of rain has fallen in Longreach since the start of winter, with a three-year drought continuing to add daily heartbreak and devastation to the region.
CDRV chairman Brian Nothdurft said the group would provide Christmas hampers for families affected by drought.
"The response so far has been overwhelming, and the families have been visibly moved to know that there are people who care about their situation," he said.
"The majority of graziers in the Longreach area have completely destocked their properties, which is their livelihood, and they are facing a very bleak Christmas."
A little bit of Christmas joy will be brought to the drought-hit town by the CDRV with a Christmas Fun Day and Concert on December 5.
"We want to make this a memorable event that will bring hope to their community," Mr Nothdurft said.
Since their two runs in April and July, the CDRV have distributed 450 boxes of food and toiletries to 110 families in the Longreach area.
"We have also distributed approximately $23,000 of the now $34,000 we've received in donated funds," Mr Nothdurft said.
"Your continued support and donations to the CDRV Outback Relief Fund can help bring a little cheer this Christmas."
The CDRV team will be at the Rose City Shoppingworld on Monday and Wednesday to accept donations and talk about their Christmas appeal.
