Juice drives his USA built drag racing vehicle at Dragfest

DRAG RACING: Call me Juice, that is what I have nominated as - that was the word from a Gold Coast driver who lists Dragfest as his favourite 1/8 mile drag racing meeting each year.

Michael 'Juice' Walton has been coming to Dragfest for eight years and was part of a weekend meeting which set a new nominations record of 245.

He drove two drag racing vehicles at the weekend, one a studebaker he calls Reckless.

"I heard about the studebaker out in the desert in California,” he said.

He bought the vehicle for $600US and then paid $5000US to get it home.

"I have had the studebaker for four years and turned it into a race car, I raced in at Dragfest for the first time last year,” he said.

You don't ask him about placings, that is a no go area.

"I am not in it for the winning, just the fun,” he said.

Other than painting Reckless on the studebaker, he has left the paintwork original. Repainting it wouldn't be a problem, he has a custom car building business and does custom painting on the Gold Coast.

He also has a sling shot dragster but in a photo finish reckons the studebaker is a bit more fun to race.

The fastest woman drag racing driver in Australia, Christine Steffens from Glenore Grove, was again at Dragfest and recorded the fastest time in qualifying.

Warwick District Drag Racing Association president Chris Loy said drivers came from as far as Cairns, Sydney and Roma for Dragfest.

"We had no incidents or crashes,” he said.

"It was a fantastic weekend. We had a social event for drivers with a sausage sizzle and band on Saturday night.”

It is rare for spectators to come by chopper but that happened at the weekend when Lakeside Raceway owner John Tetley flew into Warwick Dragway. Tetley is also heavily involved in Queensland Raceway.
