Jumpers and Jazz inspires yarnbomber to make big life change
THERESE Wallace wasn't planning to stick around in Warwick, but she found herself inextricably tangled in a town she once overlooked.
When Ms Wallace passed through last year on the way to visit family, she never thought twice about living here.
But that all changed when she was asked to pitch in with the Diggers Garden Club tree at Jumpers and Jazz.
It started out with a few stitches, but soon she was totally hooked.
Ms Wallace ended up staying for the entire festival, and has stuck around ever since.
"Through Jumpers and Jazz I discovered how hospitable the town was and what a wonderful community we have here," Ms Wallace said.
"I was really quite taken aback because I had been through Warwick so many times. It was always somewhere I just drove through and never thought I would live there because I didn't find it that attractive.
"But at Jumpers and Jazz I stopped and looked around and found I could get everything I needed here in Warwick."
Our famous, fuzzy festival was the catalyst that led Ms Wallace to put down her roots in Warwick and kiss the city of Melbourne goodbye.
Since then, her love affair with the town has grown through the festival.
As a dedicated member of the Yarntopians and by being involved with the art gallery, Ms Wallace has found some wonderful friendships in the past 12 months.
"For me it has been a lovely way to meet people," she said.
"I am in admiration of the older people in this town. They are so fit and active and very inspirational.
"If you are interested in learning any of those knitting and crocheting skills it is a lovely way to learn.
"Some of the women do beautiful work and you can learn so much from them, you discover some very talented people."
And it seems the skills are catching on.
"I've always had a really keen interest in anything tactile like knitting, sewing and crocheting," she said.
"But I have to say I taught myself to crochet only two years ago and am slowly getting better with a lot of practice."
This year Ms Wallace is looking forward to experiencing some different events at Jumpers and Jazz in July, as well as some old favourites.
The Killarney Bonfire Night is high on her list of things to look forward to.
But the auto mobile show and all the musical events will also keep her buzzing between activities.
Ms Wallace said there was always something to do during Jumpers and Jazz.
"There is always something to do if you keep your ears peeled and it doesn't have to cost money," she said.
The chance to share her new home with friends from the city is also something Ms Wallace is looking forward to.
She plans to have visitors from Brisbane during the festival and looks forward to giving them a taste of winter in our country town.
"I really think it is just a great opportunity for the town to showcase its hospitality."
