Junior angler hooks record cobia at 1.4m and 23.9kg
IT'S no wonder young Mackay angler Ryan Meads had a sore back after going out fishing last weekend.
The nine-year-old pulled in his biggest fish - a 1.4m, 23.9kg cobia.
The massive fish is a pending Australian Game Fishing Association of Australia and Queensland Game Fishing Association record, for small fry (under-11) and junior (under-16) for a cobia caught on 8kg line.
It will supersede the old Australian junior record of a 22.5kg cobia caught off the Gold Coast in 1986.
Ryan was "very, very happy" to catch such a big fish.
"It was very hard to reel in and was very, very painful. It felt like my spine was broken," he laughed.
"My biggest fish before was a Spanish mackerel and now it's a cobia."
Ryan has been fishing since he was about five.
"I like it because you can catch really big fish," he said.
The young fisherman caught the cobia trolling a lure offshore from Keswick Island.
His father Ian Meads said Ryan had to put the rod-butt between his legs as he was too small to hold the rod on his hip.
"He's worked out how to get big fish up," he said.
"He was well and truly worn out but he stuck with it, he didn't put the rod down and he kept fighting."
Meads said it took about 40 minutes for his son to reel the fish in.
"It came up to the surface four times during the fight, so we knew what it was, it was just a case of being patient enough to get it into the boat," he said.
The record is another for the Mackay Game Fishing Club to add to its collection.
It is the heaviest cobia ever weighed in at the club on any line class.
Meads said the club held two or three Australian records and it was good to add to the number.
