Juniors moving in right direction

PHIL Rolfe has no doubt junior hockey in Warwick is on the move after a winter season which will climax with grand finals on September 11.

This season, a Warwick under-13 boys team finished third in division two of the state championships at Rockhampton.

“Most of our players are 11 years of age or younger so are giving away a year or two to most of their opponents,” Rolfe said.

Warwick teams also competed in Coulter Shield competitions for U11 and U13 boys and the Southern Cross Cup for U11 and U13 girls.

On the club scene, four sides are playing in the U13 competition. Junior semi-finals are on Saturday.

Rolfe said player numbers were up compared with last year.

“The standard of play is improving each year,” Rolfe said. “Next year, we plan to take boys and girls teams in U13 and U15 age groups to state championships.”

One of the highlights for the Warwick Hockey Association in 2011 will be on the May long weekend when it hosts men's veterans championships.
