Juniors content to play on grass

PHIL ROLFE and his fellow Warwick Hockey Association members have almost been to hell and back after being hit by two floods at their Queen’s Park base.

But their enthusiasm to run a successful season on two grass fields is inspirational.

The hockey sign-on for juniors, under-7 and upwards, and seniors is from 10am to 2pm Saturday at the grounds at Queen’s Park.

“All junior and senior games will be played on grass on Saturdays,” Rolfe, the junior co-ordinator said.

Rolfe wants this season to be one of rebuilding.

“We need to get as many members as we can to warrant rebuilding a synthetic surface,” Rolfe said.

The floods in the past two months devastated the synthetic surface and association officials won’t know whether they can build a higher levy to protect a new surface until the Condamine River Flood Study is completed.

Rolfe said in an effort to get more players, the association was offering a 20 per cent discount on registration fees to any player who brought a friend/new player to the association for junior or senior competitions.

“We are hoping Hockey Queensland will wave our affiliation fees this year to help us in the aftermath of the flood,” he said.

“The cost for player registrations is the same as last year.”

Matthew Eastwell will play another season in the under-13 grade.

He first played at the age of five and was division two player of the tournament at the U13 state championships in Rockhampton last year.

“I am looking forward to another season,” Matthew said.

Jazmyn Reid is heading into her third season in U10s.

While she loves playing on synthetic, she is happy to play on grass this season.

“Hockey is fun, I like running with the ball,” she said.

The first hockey of the season will be the annual Sevens veteran’s mixed tournament at Queen’s Park on February 26-27.

Rolfe is pleasantly surprised to have 14 team nominations so far.

“Plenty of clubs/associations are keen to help us out in the aftermath of the flood,” he said.

A large contingent of club members and registered (flood) volunteers are needed at a working bee at the club grounds from 8am Saturday.

Anyone unable to sign up from 10am Saturday at the hockey grounds can call Rolfe on 0403 402 594.
