"Jack Breen is in his first year as coach of the U16 team and has had a fantastic season with the team,” Scanlan said.

"He has a great rapport with the players.”

Club captain Jayden Lippi also captains the U16 team, which won the minor premiership.

With the second and third-placed teams playing in the preliminary final and Collegians having a recent bye, the U16 team hasn't played for more than three weeks.

"Jack has increased the number of training sessions to make up for the lack of games,” Scanlan said.

"We have three teams in the grand finals and all three are strong contenders to win.”

Lock Morgan Byrne, prop Angus Ridley, fullback Jayden Tucker and five-eighth Lippi are four of the leaders in the Collegians under-16 side.

With only five teams in the U16 competition, three rounds were played.

Teams close

Goondiwindi coach Peter Bourchier said there was only 2-4 points between the teams this season.

"We won two of the games and Collegians one,” he said.

Hooker Bill Bourchier will captain the Goondiwindi Boars after coming through the ranks from the U7 grade.

Halfback Trey Bennetto played for Queensland schoolboys this year and is in his first season in U16s.

Bennetto is tall for a half but the coach said he was the player steering his team around the park.

On Tuesday night at Texas, Goondiwindi beat Stanthorpe in the U16 preliminary final.

The winners led 10-8 at half-time before running away with the game. Centre Jack Kapittke scored two tries for the Boars.

Under14s

In the U14 grade, Collegians White have improved all season and will play Wattles in the grand final.

Scanlan said coach Bob Bell has done a tremendous job coaching the 38 players in the Collegians White and Blue teams this season.”

In the first weekend of the finals series in the U14 grade, Collegians White narrowly beat Collegians Blue in the major semi.

Last weekend, Wattles came from behind to beat Collegians Blue in the preliminary final.

Stanthorpe also fielded two teams in the U14 competition to give their players the maximum possible time on the field.

Great contest

Eastern Suburbs hosted all semi finals in Warwick a fortnight ago and Texas was the venue for preliminary finals last weekend.

Collegians and Goondiwindi each have three teams in grand finals, Stanthorpe is in both league tag finals, with Tenterfield and Wattles sides playing one game each.

Eastern Suburbs and MIT Jets (Millmerran, Inglewood, Texas) had teams in the semi finals. The Jets receive support from the Ipswich Jets which plays in the Queensland Cup.
