Warwick actress' star shines in LA’s big city lights

AS A child of just three, Kate Hardy had an undeniable spark and ability to captivate an audience from the centre stage.

That talent has since ignited a passion for acting that led to the former Warwick girl hitting the Hollywood acting scene earlier this year.

Kate was one of the actors selected for the Australian Institute of Performing Arts Professional Actors' Masterclass, a five-week intensive course with industry heavyweights.

"I was in LA from April to the end of June, finding my feet in terms of acting over there and getting representation," she said.

"I did lots of classes with casting directors and industry people and learnt so much.

"The industry is so big over there and so many people do it - it was really uplifting little bubble of creativity."

The course was a highlight for the former Assumption College student, who has been chasing an acting career since she left school in 2007.

"I started dancing when I was three and I was always told I was a good dancer because I could tell the story," Kate said.

"I love stories and performing but sometimes it's a blessing and sometimes it's a curse.

"It is really hard to be an actor because there is a lot of rejection and sometimes I wish I didn't like it so much.

"In Australia there isn't a lot of work but when you are, it is such a high. And then it finishes and you are back at it again.

"Most actors will tell you'll they'll audition 21 times before they get something. If you can imagine going to 21 job interview and getting rejected every time. It's tough."

Since moving to Sydney to follow her acting dream, Kate has been able to establish herself as a professional actor.

"Last year I did a web series called SYD2030. It's about uni students studying law and living in the eastern suburbs," she said.

"It won best international web series at the LA Web Series festival and series two has been released on YouTube.

"I play the hipster bartender that is dating one of the law students.

"Web series are definitely the new 'thing'. People are watching more and more of them as the access is so easy and the content doesn't have to be filtered, etc. It's all our own."

Kate said she loved working on the web series and also acted in a few TV commercials and short films.

"Honestly I will do anything if I like the story," she said.

"It has always been film that I love and have wanted to do but lately I have been really getting into the gritty TV shows you see on HBO."

Although she currently lives in Sydney, Kate said she would love the chance to make the move to the United States and develop her career.

"LA is big enough for everyone and there is so much work," she said.

"Everyone is so positive and upbeat and the casting directors are honest and give positive criticism.

"In Australia people are pretty supportive but it isn't as big here so I get asked 'why don't you audition for Home and Away'.

"I get that a lot."
